HOUSTON – After winning nine of ten events, the LSU women’s swimming and diving team jumped out to first place in the team standings after Day One of a two-day quad meet with Houston, Rice, and Tulane. The Tigers are currently beating the Cougars 120-66 the Owls 136-47, and the Green Wave 142-44.

“I’m obviously pretty pleased with the results,” said LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer. “We are allowing the women to do what they need to do in preparation for the SEC’s and the confidence was contagious today.”

The night started off strong for the Tigers after victories in the 400-yard medley relay, where the relay team of Grace Horton, Summer Spradley, Gabrielle Pick and Haylee Knight combined to post a winning time of 3:42.77.

The Tigers got more than just a win in the 1000 freestyle. Not only did the Tigers take both first and second place through Jane MacDougall and Lexi Daniels, but both also set personal-best times. MacDougall broke the 10-minute barrier for the first time, racing to a time of 9:59.94 and the fourth fastest time in program history. Daniels took silver after touching the wall at 10:03.38.

“Jane and Lexi really got the women fired up in that 1000. From that point, it was just seeing who was going to step up next.”

Megan Loop rounded out the top-five with a personal-best time of 10:11.72.

Katie Smith soon followed MacDougall’s lead with a win and personal-best, this time in the 100 backstroke. Smith was able to get the win with a time of 55.32 seconds.

Junior Summer Spradley won her second 200 breaststroke event in three weeks, as she took home the victory courtesy of a time of 2:15.87.

The wins kept coming for the Tigers, as Tennyson Henry recorded a win in the 200 freestyle with a personal-best time of 1:48.77. Alyssa Helak also set a new personal-best time of 1:52.51, which was good enough for ninth overall.

“Katie had a big swim in the 100 back near her best time,” explained Geyer. “Summer continues to learn how to race the 200 breast, and Tennyson dropped a monster 200 free."

The Tigers continued their freestyle success as they swept the podium in the 50 freestyle. Haylee Knight took first at 23.24, Leyre Casarin took silver at 23.46, and Lauren McIntosh rounded out the top three with a personal-best time of 23.72.

In the final individual event, Nicole Rozier won the 200 individual medley by over two seconds with a time of 2:02.55.

Finally, to end the night, the 200 free relay team of Knight, Spradley, Horton and Casarin, worked together to post a time of 1:32.84.

“For being a little short-handed, it was fun to see people really jump into new roles today.”

Diving also had a successful day in the diving well, taking three of the top four spots in the 3-meter springboard competition, led by a win courtesy of junior Lizzie Cui. Cui shattered her previous season-best score, posting a 376.90.

Makayla Robillard finished third, scoring a 273.35, and Rileigh Knox finished fourth, diving to a score of 261.80.

“I’m very happy with our performance on the boards today,” said LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer. “Our training this week has been good. Lizzie was rock solid with her best performance of the season. Tomorrow is another day, and we look to continue to carry our momentum forward.”
