Volleyball Comes Back to Defeat Vols in Five

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In the regular season finale and after falling in the first two sets, the LSU volleyball team (20-9, 11-7 SEC) claimed the next three to defeat Tennessee (12-15, 5-13 SEC) on the road in five sets in Thompson-Boling Arena Friday evening by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 15-9. 

The Tigers finished with four in double-digit kills with freshman Taylor Bannister leading the way with 16 kills. Jacqui Armer and Toni Rodriguez each had 15 kills while senior Gina Tillis finished with 10 kills and 13 digs for her 12th double-double on the year and 28th in her career. Freshman Raigen Cianciulli finished with a match-high 24 digs. Anna Zwiebel also finished with a double-double of 42 assists and 14 digs, her 10th on the year and 17th in her career.

Opening Set
The Tigers got out to a 5-3 lead but Tennessee went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-5 lead. The Tigers scored two straight but only scored three more point into the media timeout, trailing Tennessee 15-10. The Tigers came within three, 16-13 but Tennessee pushed its lead back up 22-16 after a service ace, and then 23-17 before taking the set 25-19.

Set Two
Tennessee scored the first three points and took an early 6-2 lead, but the Tigers went on a 3-0 run to bring them within one, 6-5. The Vols would go on to score six of the next eight points and forced LSU to take a timeout. The Tigers went on a 3-0 run to cut the Tennessee lead to 21-16. Tennessee took a timeout and scored two straight before the Tigers went on another 3-0 run. The Tigers held off Tennessee for two straight set points but Tennessee claimed the set 25-21 and took a 2-0 lead.

Set Three
LSU got behind 3-1 but went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. Tennessee tied the set up at 6-6 and the two teams went point-for-point until the Tigers went on a 3-0 run to take a 15-13 edge into the media timeout. The Tigers went up 19-16 but four-straight points for Tennessee put the Vols ahead 20-19. The two teams went back and forth. LSU scored two straight to take a 23-22 lead. Tennessee tied it up at 23-23 but a Taylor Bannister kill and a Tennessee error gave the set to LSU.

Set Four
The set was tied up five times before the Tigers went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Tigers lead at 14-10 and 16-12 before Tennessee came within tow, 16-14. Tennessee tied up the set at 17-17 and again at 20-20 before LSU scored four straight points. Tennessee scored two in a row but LSU secured the set after a Tennessee service error.

Set Five
After falling behind 4-1, the Tigers rallied on a 6-0 run to take a 7-4 lead and force Tennessee to take a timeout. Out the timeout, the teams switched sides after LSU extended the lead to 8-4. The Tigers went up 13-7 after a 3-0 run and claimed the win 15-9.

Team Notes
>> With the win, the Tigers now have 20 on the year which is the seventh season under Fran Flory that the Tigers have had 20 or more wins.

>> On the year, the Tigers are now 2-5 when trailing 2-0 on a match and 6-1 in five set matches.

>> This is the first win in Knoxville since October 12, 2014.
