Gym Continues Fall With Outstanding Intrasquad
Assistant Communications Director
BATON ROUGE – The LSU gymnastics team completed its second full intrasquad of the fall and posted a strong score of 197-plus Friday afternoon at the Gymnastics Training Facility.
The Tigers continue their preparation for the season and in particular Gym 101 at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, inside the Maravich Center. Labeled a “Gymnastics Showcase,” Gym 101 will provide fans a first look at the 2018 Tigers who will perform routines on all four events.
Admission to the event is free to the public and season ticket holders will have the opportunity to pick up their Holy Cow t-shirts for attending the meet. Season tickets for 2018 are selling fast as the program quickly approaches 5,000 season ticket holders for the first time in school history.
On Friday, All-Americans Myia Hambrick and Sarah Finnegan led the way for LSU in the all-around with scores of 39.575 and 39.375 respectively. Senior Erin Macadaeg, Junior McKenna Kelley and freshman Sami Durante also shined for the Tigers.
“Myia and Sarah were both very solid for us,” head coach D-D Breaux said. “McKenna is also really helping us and competing on three events. Following her shoulder surgery, she has really improved her range of motion and self-confidence. Sami is always so beautiful on bars and she adds depth to that event.”
The vault lineup started the day strong with scores of 9.90 by Kennedi Edney, the reigning NCAA Vault National Champion, and Hambrick. Kelley also continues to develop in the event after only vaulting once in competition last season.
Associate head coach Jay Clark’s bars lineup for the intrasquad featured 10 routines. Macadaeg, Hambrick and Finnegan totaled scores of 9.85 or better. Durante closed out the second rotation with a 9.90.
The Tigers’ beam lineup will once again reload and be one of the deepest in the nation. Macadaeg started off things strong with a 9.90 and Hambrick followed in her usual third spot with a 9.95. Finnegan performed in the anchor spot of the lineup and posted a 9.95. Newcomers Christina Desiderio, Bridget Dean, Rheagan Campbell and Olivia Gunter also performed routines.
LSU continues to work toward completed floor routines before the squad leaves town for Thanksgiving break. Ashlyn Kirby posted a 9.85 in the leadoff, Hambrick scored a 9.875 and Kelley totaled a 9.925 in the sixth spot of the lineup.
“We continue to train hard toward Gym 101 and the season,” Breaux added. “Today was sort of a midway point and we were able to evaluate our team. I like where we are as a team. Our freshmen are going to step up and make contributions. Bars and beam are both really deep and vault and floor, our leg events, will continue to get better as we get closer to the season.”
LSU will host six home meets in the Maravich Center in 2018, starting with Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas in the season opener on Friday, Jan. 5. The Tigers will also take on Alabama, Kentucky, Texas Woman’s, Auburn and Arizona inside the PMAC.
