BATON ROUGE, La. – In his debut season with the Tigers, freshman Eric Coston made his presence felt as he was one of seven named Friday evening to the SEC Men’s Cross Country All-Freshman Team.

Coston becomes the most recent SEC postseason award recipient since junior Dajour Braxton was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2015. Braxton marked the first LSU cross country runner on either the men’s or women’s team to take home a major SEC postseason award.

Head Coach Mark Rinker feels this honor is well-deserved for Coston, and believes his future is filled with potential.

“I’m happy for Eric,” Rinker said. “He has worked hard all fall and has earned the recognition. I’m looking forward to seeing how he continues to grow and develop.”

The Covington-native made major contributions in his first collegiate season for the men’s team as he led the men’s team in four of six races, all of which were on 8k courses. Coston notched his best 8k time in the Texas A&M Invitational, where he recorded a time of 24 minutes, 17.3 seconds placing eighth.

His other Top 10 finish of the season was his best individual finish of the season in his first race as a Tiger. In the New Orleans Invitational, Coston earned seventh place with a time of 15:48.59 on the 5k course. Coston’s efforts pushed the Tigers to a second place team finish, their best mark of the season.

Coston maintained consistency throughout his freshman campaign. In the two occasions he was not the first finisher for the men’s team, Coston placed in the Top 15 individually for both. Another measure of Coston’s dependability is evident in that he never placed outside of the Top 40 in any race this season.

Coston will look to provide similar production two weeks from now as the Tigers and Lady Tigers will compete in the NCAA South Central Regional held in College Station, Texas. The regional meet is scheduled for Friday, November 10, and the women are set to start at 9:15 a.m. CT with the men following at 10:15 a.m. CT.
