BATON ROUGE – LSU freshman Chiara Ritchie-Williams solidified her reputation as one of the top young defenders in college soccer Sunday when she was awarded All-Southeastern Conference honors as a second-team selection by the league’s head coaches on the strength of her outstanding rookie season.

Ritchie-Williams’ selection marks the 14th-straight season since 2004 in which at least one LSU Tiger has been recognized as an All-SEC performer as either a first-team, second-team or all-freshman honoree.

“Chiara fully deserves the honor and has laid the groundwork for a great career here at LSU,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “She headlines a freshman class that has all the signs to make a huge impact over the next several years – five starters, several others with potential and most importantly the kind of work ethic and character championship teams can be built around.”

A native of London, England, Ritchie-Williams hit the ground running for the Tigers since first stepping onto campus in Baton Rouge for preseason training as she has started all 18 matches of her freshman season while establishing herself as one of the SEC’s top central defenders in 2017.

The England youth international and product of the Arsenal Ladies academy was among just four freshmen honored with first-team or second-team All-SEC accolades for the 2017 season as SEC head coaches voted 34 total players to the two All-SEC squads. Florida’s SEC Freshman of the Year Deanne Rose, Ole Miss’ Channing Foster and Arkansas Parker Goins were the other freshmen chosen as All-SEC performers.
