Women's Basketball Starts Practice On Sunday
BATON ROUGE – The 2017-18 version of the LSU women’s basketball team starts practicing on Sunday, Oct. 1. It is the first official practice before the Lady Tigers season opener at USF in Tampa on Friday, Nov. 10.
Head coach Nikki Fargas returns seven letterwinners, led by reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year Raigyne Moncrief. Moncrief, the lone senior on the team, was a second team All-SEC honoree and a member of the SEC All-Defensive team last season. She averaged 15.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Tigers, but it was her 3.3 steals per game last season that sealed her defensive honors.
Junior Chloe Jackson and sophomore Ayana Mitchell are the next top returning scorers with 13.1 and 8.1 points per game, respectively. Mitchell brings the top returning shooting percentage to the court at 59.7, while Jackson was the squad’s top three-point shooter last year with a 30.6 shooting percentage and 19 made shots.
Fargas is in her seventh season as the head coach at LSU. The 2016-17 team finished 20-12 overall and 8-8 in SEC competition. The Lady Tigers made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament during Fargas’ tenure last year.
