BATON ROUGE,  La. -- Former LSU outfielder Andrew Stevenson received a Major League call-up Sunday from the Washington Nationals, and he is scheduled to join the team in Phoenix for its 3:05 p.m. CT game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Stevenson will join the Nationals after his contract was selected Sunday from the Syracuse (N.Y.) Chiefs, the club’s AAA affiliate.

Stevenson, the Nationals’ second-round draft choice in 2015, becomes the 15th LSU player coached by Paul Mainieri to reach the big leagues.

A native of Lafayette, La., Stevenson played at LSU from 2013 through 2015, and he helped lead the Tigers to College World Series appearances in 2013  and 2015, and the SEC championship in 2015.

Stevenson, who started in 154 games in center field during his college career, earned 2015 first-team All-SEC and third-team All-America honors at LSU, and he was a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Stevenson batted .348 (86-for-247) in 2015 with 13 doubles, five triples, one homer, 24 RBI, 53 runs and 26 stolen bases. He was named to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament Team, batting .500 (6-for-12) with one double, one RBI, four runs and two stolen bases, and he hit.368 (43-for-117) in SEC regular-season games with seven doubles, one homer, 11 RBI, 25 runs and 10 steals.

The other Mainieri-coached LSU players to reach the major leagues are infielder JaCoby Jones, infielder Alex Bregman, infielder Ryan Schimpf, pitcher Nick Goody, outfielder Mikie Mahtook, pitcher Nick Rumbelow, pitcher Aaron Nola, pitcher Louis Coleman, pitcher Charlie Furbush, pitcher Ryan Verdugo, infielder DJ LeMahieu, pitcher Anthony Ranaudo, pitcher Kevin Gausman and infielder Matt Clark.

LSU has had at least one former player make his MLB debut in 25 of the past 27 seasons. The Tigers have produced a total of 73 Major Leaguers during their illustrious baseball history.
