BATON ROUGE – LSU’s representation at the 117th United States Amateur Championship rose to five in Madison, Mississippi, on Monday when rising junior Nathan Jeansonne fired a 4-under 68 and 3-under 69 in two rounds played at Annandale Golf Club to claim a three-shot victory with a total score of 7-under par.

Jeansonne topped the charts Monday at 7-under par to earn his trip to Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, next month as the 117th U.S. Amateur Championships will be held Aug. 14-20.

Final Leaderboard

“I’ve missed it by one (shot), maybe two last year and by two the other time I tried,” Jeansonne told the Shreveport Times’ Roy Lang III of his past qualifying experiences for the U.S. Amateur Championship. “I figured maybe the third time had to be a charm. I’ve been hitting it good the past two or three months.”

LSU teammates Blake Caldwell and Carter Toms finished just outside the qualifying places for the U.S. Amateur in the qualifier at Annandale Golf Club as Caldwell, a rising senior from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, trailed five shots back in fourth place at 2-under 142 and Toms, a sophomore-to-be from Shreveport, tied for fifth place at 1-under 143.

Jeansonne is the second LSU golfer to win a U.S. Amateur qualifier this year after soon-to-be sophomore Philip Barbaree shot 9-under 133 at Texas Star Golf Course in Euless, Texas, last week, including a course-record score of 8-under 63 in the first round.

Three Tigers are exempt into the U.S. Amateur field next month based on their performance since last summer. Sam Burns, the 2017 NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year, is exempt based on a Top-50 ranking in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, while Luis Gagne is exempt as a match play quarterfinalist a year ago and Class of 2017 recruit Jacob Bergeron is in the field thanks to his junior golf ranking.
