BATON ROUGE – The LSU Track & Field teams are ready to kick off their run to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky, for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds scheduled to begin Thursday at the University of Kentucky Track & Field Complex.

The No. 8-ranked Tigers and No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers will compete with their goal of earning their spot in the national semifinals as the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds are set to run through Saturday.

The UK Track & Field Complex will serve as one of two host sites for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds this weekend as the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. The University of Kentucky are set to play host to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds for the first time in the history of the competition.

The NCAA Selection Committee has accepted the Top 48 performers in each individual event and the Top 24 relay teams in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays to compete at each site serving as hosts of the NCAA Preliminary Rounds for a total of 96 individuals and 48 relays competing in all events nationwide with the goal of moving on to the national semifinals.

When competing at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, the Top 12 finishers in each open and relay event will qualify for the semifinal and final rounds of the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene from June 7-10.

LSU has qualified a total of 44 entries into the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds between the men's and women's teams, including 16 entries for the Tigers and 28 entries for the Lady Tigers to rank among the NCAA best. In fact, the Lady Tigers are tied for the second-most entries among women's teams between the East and West prelims as they trail only Oregon's 31 entries and match Arkansas' 28 entries this season.

“Coaches like to tell their athletes to approach each meet one day at a time and focus only on what they can control each time they have the opportunity to compete,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “That mantra is never more a reality than this time of year. Both of our teams have five days of an NCAA Championship coming up over the next couple of weeks, so it's important that we not get too far ahead of ourselves and look to Eugene before first taking care of our business here in Lexington.

“It's important that we take each day as it comes here and focus only on what we need to do to advance through the rounds each day to give ourselves the best chance to compete when we go to Oregon.”

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers are among the nation's top teams again this season as they prepare for the start of the NCAA Championships. The Lady Tigers have matched their highest national ranking this season for their recent performance at the SEC Championships as they rank No. 3 among women's teams while the Tigers rank No. 8 among men's teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
