ATHENS, Ga. --- The LSU women’s tennis couldn’t capitalize on an early lead and several comeback attempts, falling to the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 5-2 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex Friday.

LSU dropped to 13-8 (6-6 SEC) with the loss, while Georgia improved to 17-3 (11-1 SEC).

“I’m very proud of this team for how we competed today and for putting ourselves in position to beat this team,” co-head coach Julia Sell said. “We had our chances and we are going to build from this match and be better on Sunday.”

The Tigers got off to an incredible start in doubles, snapping Georgia’s streak of ten straight doubles points leading up to today’s match.

The pairing of Jessica Golovin and Skylar Holloway took down the No. 90 duo of Marta Gonzalez and Mariana Gould on court 3, winning by a score of 6-3 to give the Tigers the early advantage.

Georgia leveled things up with No. 11 Ellen Perez and Caroline Brinson defeating the No. 23 pairing of Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster on court 1, 6-3.

When the doubles points fell on the shoulders of freshman partners Jade Lewis and Becca Weissmann on court two, they were already in the midst of a valiant comeback after falling behind early to No. 29 Elena Christofi and Kennedy Shaffer. The freshmen delivered with the highest-ranked doubles win of their young careers, a huge 6-4 victory over Christofi/Shaffer to give the Tigers an early 1-0 overall lead heading into singles.

The early momentum supplied by the doubles point was temporarily stalled to begin singles play as the Bulldogs came out hot, taking early leads on five out of six courts.

The Tigers refused to go down, however, and pushed three courts to seven games in the first sets. The Bulldogs would ultimately claim five first-set victories, with the exception being on court six, where Holloway ran away with an early 6-1 first-set win over Gould.

Georgia leveled the overall score at one apiece with No. 25 Perez defeating No. 18 Lewis on court one before gaining a 2-1 advantage as No. 11 Christofi soon followed with a win over No. 60 Valle Costa, both by the same 6-0, 6-3 score.

Holloway finished what she started on court six, however, and quickly dispatched No. 112 Gould 6-1, 6-3 to claim her highest-ranked win of the season, tying the score at 2-2 in the process.

Court three was the next to finish, as Foster’s valiant effort fell just short in a 7-5, 7-5 loss to No. 67 Shaffer. Foster overcame an early deficit in the first set and got off to a strong start in the second, but had trouble closing them out in a closely-contested match that ended in Georgia’s favor, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

Georgia clinched the match on court four with yet another narrow win as No. 58 Brinson defeated Golovin 7-5, 6-4.

Weissmann played out her match on court five following Georgia’s clinch and forced a decisive third set after dropping the first set in a tiebreak and winning the second set in a tiebreak. In a shortened ten-point tiebreak, Weissmann dropped the third set 12-10, leaving the final score at 5-2 in favor of Georgia.

The Tigers will play their final match of the regular season in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
