NCAA Qualifiers in Action

A host of athletes competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend will open their outdoor seasons at the Louisiana Classics, including eight earning All-America honors with their performance.

Senior Blair Henderson is scheduled to line up in the 1,500 meters during Saturday’s events, while senior LaMar Bruton is entered in the 800 meters and sophomore Jaron Flournoy will line up in the 100-meter dash this weekend. Henderson earned his first career All-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the men’s 800-meter final in his first ever appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while Bruton and Flournoy ran as part of LSU’s 4x400-meter relay team that picked up All-America honors with a fourth-place national finish.

Flournoy could also feature as part of the Tigers’ 4x100-meter relay pool on Saturday along with fellow indoor All-American Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, who placed fourth nationally in the 200 meters while also running a leg on their 4x400-meter relay to close out the championship last Saturday night in College Station.

Freshman All-American Ruby Stauber follows her fifth-place finish in the women’s 800-meter final at the NCAA Indoor meet by running the 5,000 meters in Saturday’s finale at the Louisiana Classics. Also running the 5k for the Lady Tigers is senior Morgan Schuetz, who placed ninth overall in the qualifying round of the 800 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend.

Other LSU athletes scheduled to compete this weekend after appearing in College Station include senior Travia Jones and junior Kymber Payne in the women’s 400 meters, sophomore Erika Lewis in the women’s 800 meters and freshman Cassondra Hall in the women’s 100-meter dash.

Hall might also be joined in the Lady Tigers’ 4x100-meter relay pool by senior Jada Martin, juniors Mikiah Brisco and Aleia Hobbs and sophomore Kortnei Johnson as they look to line up two teams on Saturday.

Outdoor Openers

Junior Tinashe Mutanga leads a host of other Tigers making their outdoor debuts at the Louisiana Classics as he lines up in the men’s 100-meter dash alongside freshmen Akanni Hislop and Xavier Mulugata.
