AUBURN, Ala. – In what turned out to be another back-and-forth affair between two strong conference sides, the No. 12 LSU softball team wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard in a 5-4 loss to No. 2 Auburn to drop the series 2-1.

In almost a repeat of the first game between the two on Friday, LSU (19-6, 1-2 Southeastern) this time fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to take the lead in the fifth, only to see Auburn come back to take the lead again in the bottom half of the frame. LSU never lost the fight and scored a run in the seventh to tie it for the second time, but unfortunately for the squad an error in the bottom of the seventh ended game in Auburn’s (22-3, 2-1) favor.

Leading the charge offensively for LSU on the afternoon was sophomore Amber Serrett who finished the game going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Bailey Landry was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored as the two combined for five of LSU’s nine hits on the afternoon.

Allie Walljasper earned the start and after Auburn took the lead in the first was able to regroup and was efficient for much of her 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Carley Hoover (4-3) would suffer the loss as she came on in relief and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Kaylee Carlson earned the win for Auburn, pitching all seven innings giving up four runs, three earned, with two walks and six strikeouts. The Auburn defense committed three errors defensively behind her, but offensively got three hits from Carlee Wallace to aid in the win.

The Game Turned When…

Part One: Down 2-0 and trying to get anything across, Serrett doubled to right to bring in Constance Quinn to cut the deficit to one. Walljasper came on to pinch hit and on the first pitch singled to left to drive in Serrett to tie the game at 2-2. A triple from Landry gave LSU its first and only lead of the day to bring in Andrews who came on to run for Walljasper.

Part Two: After Auburn came back to re-take the lead at 4-3, Jaquish hit a single to center and an error in the field allowed Landry to score to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.

Part Three: With one out on the board a single put an Auburn runner on, with a walk putting two on. A grounder to Serrett at short would force out the lead runner at third, as on the next play a grounder to third looked to be the final out to send the game to extra innings, but the throw sailed wide of the bag for the error allowing the winning Auburn run to score to make it 5-4.

Head Coach Beth Torina on splitting the two games on Sunday…

“I think we let the details get away from us in the last game. Some small things, but obviously we have a better focus of what we need to do when we get back to campus. But ultimately, we showed we’re capable of big things. Luckily for us, we’re not playing for the conference championship this weekend. Of course we want to win the SEC Championship, but we showed that we can fight, hit and do everything it takes to be one of the best in the league.”

Torina on the production of the lineup throughout the day…

“We had huge day out of Amber Serrett, but throughout the lineup everyone contributed. I can’t think of a point where there wasn’t somebody that didn’t help in some way, shape or form. It was nice to see everyone be a part of it. This is a team sport. It’s not any one person’s fault or any one’s person’s success in that we’re all doing this together and playing together

LSU will be back in action on Thursday, taking on the Wichita State Shockers at 5 p.m. in Wichita.
