LSU to Implement Clear Bag Policy in Athletics Venues
Assoc. Athletic Director/Communications
BATON ROUGE – LSU will implement a clear bag policy for all athletic events in 2016-17, the school announced on Wednesday.
The new LSU policy is consistent with what the NFL and other professional organizations have done for the past several years. The policy is also in line with what Southeastern Conference member institutions Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, and South Carolina are putting into place this year. Additional SEC schools are expected to announce a clear bag policy in the coming weeks.

“Over the past couple of years, I asked members of my staff, along with athletics officials, to discuss and research the need to go to a clear bag policy for entry into sports venues on our campus,” LSU President F. King Alexander said. “After gathering information, I made the decision a few months ago to go ahead with the new clear bag policy for our campus beginning with our fall sports this year.
“Our updated policy is consistent with that of the NFL and is the latest in what has been many safety features installed over the past few years on our campus.”
Only clear tote bags smaller than 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Tiger Stadium and other athletic venues on the LSU campus this year. In addition, small handheld clutch purses will continued to be permitted into LSU venues.
All backpacks regardless of size are prohibited and any bags larger than 12” x 6” x 12”, clear or non-clear will be strictly prohibited. Exceptions will be made for approved medical needs and diaper bags (with baby). All bags will be subject to search and inspection.
“Providing a safe environment for those in attendance at LSU Athletic events is our top priority,” LSU Police Captain Marshall Waters said, “Safety and security practices are constantly evolving and the clear bag policy is becoming the standard in spectator sport venues. The clear bag policy makes checking bags much more effective and efficient, allowing for a safer stadium and faster entry for those in attendance.”
Beginning August 1, LSU will launch a month-long social media and marketing campaign to educate fans on the clear bag policy. LSU is also planning to giveaway a number of clear tote bags at the school’s Fan Day on Aug. 14 as well as having other opportunities for fans to get complimentary bags prior to football season.
Clear tote bags that comply with the new policy are also available at major retailers in Baton Rouge, including LSUShop.net.
