Simmons Named SEC Preseason Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – LSU freshman Ben Simmons and junior Tim Quarterman were named to the preseason All-SEC teams announced here Wednesday at the ESPNU/SEC Network headquarters as part of the annual SEC TipOff 16, the conference’s annual men’s basketball media day.
Simmons, not only was a selection for the six-player first team, but also the preseason Player of the Year selection. Simmons becomes just the second freshman chosen as the preseason POY by the media, joining Kentucky’s Julius Randle in 2013.
Quarterman, who is coming off a strong sophomore campaign averaging over double figures in point and 4.0 assists per game, was a member of the preseason second team.
Joining Simmons on the first team are Danuel House of Texas A&M, Damian Jones of Vanderbilt, Skal Labissiere of Kentucky, Stefan Moody of Ole Miss and Tyler Ulis of Kentucky.
Kentucky was predicted to win the 2016 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball championship in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members.
Points were compiled on a 14‐13‐12‐11‐10‐9‐8‐7‐6‐5‐4‐3‐2‐1 basis. Each media member also voted for the five‐player All‐SEC Team. Ties were not broken.
LSU was picked fourth, but just 11 points behind third selection Texas A&M and 24 points behind second place Vanderbilt. Georgia is 67 behind in fifth. The rest of the league predictions fine Florida in sixth followed by South Carolina, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama and Missouri.
The 2015‐16 campaign begins November 13, with conference play set to begin January 2. The 2016 SEC Tournament will be March 9‐13 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

LSU men’s basketball head coach Johnny Jones and players Ben Simmons and Keith Hornsby took part in a successful SEC TipOff 16 in Charlotte Wednesday that took place in three different locations – the ESPNU/SEC Network studios, an office building that handled some of the overflow video needs and finally the writing and local TV venue at the Ballantyne Hotel.
Much of the programming at the SEC Network studios was used for the College Basketball Live show from Noon to 2 Wednesday on ESPNU and much more was used Wednesday night on SEC Now. Both players were featured on live segments on the ESPNU show and Simmons was featured on the live Paul Finebaum show on the SEC Network following a taped interview with Coach Jones.
And Simmons, again was able to hit the famous no look over the shoulder center court shot on the outdoor court at the SEC Network studios and this time several different cameras from the network were rolling.
