Notes on the Tigers
LSU captured the 2015 Southeastern Conference championship over the weekend as the Tigers won two of three games over South Carolina … the Tigers claimed their league-best 16th SEC championship and their third title during coach Paul Mainieri’s nine season-tenure … LSU also won the SEC Western Division title for the 18th time in school history and for the fifth time under Mainieri … LSU finished the regular season with 46 wins, the third-highest regular-season total in school history … LSU has won 23 of its last 27 games and 16 of its last 19 … the Tigers enter this week’s SEC Tournament as the two-time defending tournament champions, and LSU has won the event in five of the past seven seasons … junior first baseman Chris Chinea led the Tigers to the series win at South Carolina, batting .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, two homers and six RBI … for the entire four-game week, Chinea hit .412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, two homers, seven RBI and four runs scored … Chinea is LSU’s leading hitter this season, batting .374 with 15 doubles, 11 homers and 53 RBI … remarkably, Chinea had no home runs through the first 25 games of the season, but he has 11 dingers over the last 30 games … junior centerfielder Andrew Stevenson hit .500 (7-for-14) in the South Carolina series with one double, two RBI and four runs … senior third baseman Conner Hale also hit .500 (6-for-12) at USC with two doubles, one RBI and five runs scored … sophomore leftfielder Jake Fraley hit .455 (5-for-11) against the Gamecocks with one double, two RBI and three runs … as a team, the Tigers hit .360 (41-for-114) in the South Carolina series with 10 doubles, three homers and 24 runs … freshman right-hander Austin Bain earned his first career SEC win on Friday, limiting South Carolina to two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings with one walk and seven strikeouts … freshman right-hander Alex Lange improved to 10-0 on the season Saturday win a win over the Gamecocks; Lange allowed just one run on one hit in five innings with three walks and nine strikeouts … the nine Ks represented the most for Lange in a game since he struck out 13 against Kentucky on March 28 … LSU’s opponent has scored first in 10 of the Tigers’ last 12 SEC games; however, LSU is 7-3 in those 10 games in which it faced an early deficit … five LSU players received their bachelor’s degrees last weekend in graduation events, including catcher Kade Scivicque, outfielder Chris Sciambra, pitcher Zac Person, pitcher Brady Domangue and pitcher Kyle Bouman.
