Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 1 this week in the five polls released Monday morning, marking the eighth week this season the Tigers are No. 1 in at least one poll … LSU was 3-1 in its games last week, including an SEC series victory over Mississippi State … the Tigers have reached the 40-win mark for the seventh time in coach Paul Mainieri’s nine seasons, and for the 27th time in the past 32 seasons … LSU has won 17 of its last 20 games and 10 of its last 12 … coach Paul Mainieri earned his 400th career LSU victory when the Tigers defeated Mississippi State, 5-3 in 14 innings, on Thursday night … Mainieri, who now has an LSU record of 401-157-3 in nine seasons, is the second-winningest coach in school annals, trailing only Skip Bertman, who won 870 games from 1984-2001 … like Mainieri, Bertman recorded his 400th LSU win in his ninth season at the school … senior third baseman Conner Hale led LSU to a series victory at Mississippi State over the weekend, batting .389 (7-for-18) with two doubles, six RBI, four runs and a .421 on-base percentage … Hale provided the game-winning hit in Game 1 on Thursday, smashing a two-run double in the top of the 14th inning to lift the Tigers to a 5-3 win … in Saturday’s 11-4 victory over the Bulldogs, Hale drove in three runs with two hits, and he collected three hits and one RBI in the series finale on Saturday … Hale is LSU’s leading RBI producer this season, having driven in 44 runs, and he is batting .333 on the year with 14 doubles, two triples, four homers and 34 runs scored … junior shortstop Alex Bregman extended his current hit streak to 13 games and his current reached base streak to 45 games … Bregman had four doubles in the Mississippi State series and hit .400 (6-for-15) with three RBI and five runs in the three games … junior first baseman Chris Chinea batted .526 (10-for-19) in four games last week with one homer, four RBI and four runs … he batted .500 (8-for-16) in the Mississippi State series with one homer, four RBI and two runs … sophomore right-hander Hunter Newman earned his fourth save in four straight appearances, blanking Mississippi State through three innings on Friday with three strikeouts … Newman has made 15 appearances this season and is now 2-0 on the year with a 0.34 ERA and four saves … sophomore left-hander Jared Poche’ turned in the longest outing of his career on Thursday at Mississippi State, firing nine innings and limiting the Bulldogs to two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts … Poche’ was not involved in the decision of LSU’s eventual 14-inning win, but the effort surpassed his previous career-long outing of 8.2 innings last season versus Georgia.
