BATON ROUGE – LSU sophomore middle blocker Briana Holman was named the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week the league announced Tuesday, earning the DeSoto, Texas, native the first weekly honor for the season and the fifth of her career.
In her stellar freshman campaign in 2013, Holman earned the league’s top award once, while she was named the freshman of the week three times on the year. She is also only the second player since 1996 to earn it in the very first week, sharing that honor with Ivana Kuzmic who also did it in 2005.
The Tigers opened the regular season this past weekend at the Purdue Mortar Board Premier where Holman was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 4.27 kills per set, 1.09 blocks per set, with a .409 hitting percentage and six service aces. Her kills per set is currently tops in the SEC, while her attack percentage is sixth and 0.55 service aces per set is fifth.
In the opening match of the year against No. 15 San Diego, Holman finished with 17 kills, three aces and two blocks to account for 21 points against the Toreros, including coming on strong in the end where she had nine in the fourth set alone on an efficient 13 swings with just one error.
Later that afternoon, she came back with another standout performance in the team’s 3-1 win over South Florida, blasting 16 kills with three more aces and a pair of blocks. This time she did her damage early with six kills for a .625 average to start, as LSU claimed its first win of the season.
Holman’s dominant all-around game came through against No. 7 Purdue in the final match of the tournament, leading the team with 14 kills, while proving to be stout defensively with eight blocks, which led all players on the afternoon. She had no less than four kills in any set, having two errorless sets in the second and third.
LSU will we be back in action in two weeks, taking part in the Four Points by Sheraton Seminole Invitational, hosted by Florida State.
