Baseball Summer League Wrap-Up

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU baseball players that participated in summer collegiate leagues are returning to Baton Rouge, ready to begin fall semester classes on Monday, Aug. 25.

Several Tigers excelled in summer league competition, sharpening their skills for the 2015 season as LSU seeks to earn its fourth straight NCAA Tournament National Seed and advance to the College World Series for the second time in three years.

Junior shortstop Alex Bregman led the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team to the Honkbal Week Tournament championship in the Netherlands in July as he earned Most Valuable Player honors. Bregman hit .367 in the eight-game tournament with two RBI, eight runs scored, six stolen bases and a .441 on-base percentage. He struck out just once in 30 at-bats, and he committed only one error in 39 chances.

For the entire 28-game summer schedule, Bregman collected five doubles, one homer, 17 RBI, 20 runs and 10 steals in 10 attempts. Team USA posted an 18-8-2 final record with a schedule that included games against Cuba, Japan and Chinese Taipei.

Seven LSU players were selected to participate in their respective leagues’ All-Star games. Junior outfielder Andrew Stevenson, senior infielder Conner Hale, junior outfielder Mark Laird, junior catcher Chris Chinea and sophomore infielder Kramer Robertson played in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game; senior left-hander Henri Faucheux was chosen for the Alaska League All-Star Game; and senior right-hander Brady Domangue was selected for the Florida Collegiate League All-Star Game.

Stevenson helped lead the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the Cape Cod League title, batting .327 (55-for-168) with nine doubles, one triple, one homer, 16 RBI, 30 runs, and 21 stolen bases.

Hale helped lead the Falmouth Commodores to the Cape Cod League championship series, batting .327 (56-for-171) with 12 doubles, one triple, four homers and 38 RBI.

Laird batted .358 this summer for the Bourne Braves with four doubles, two triples, one homer, 22 RBI, 23 runs and 17 steals, and Chinea hit .310 (27-for-87) with four doubles and 18 RBI for the Wareham Gatemen. Robertson, also playing for Wareham, hit .277 (31-for-112) with two doubles, one homer, four RBI, 18 runs and three stolen bases.

Faucheux had a 1.78 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 35.1 innings for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska League, and Domangue recorded 25 strikeouts in 27.2 innings for the Winter Garden Squeeze of the Florida Collegiate League.

Sophomore left-hander Jared Poche’ made four appearances for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League, recording two wins and 19 strikeouts in 20 innings. Sophomore infielder Danny Zardon hit .305 (29-for-95) for Harwich with five doubles and 12 RBI, and sophomore outfielder Jake Fraley collected two doubles, one triple, seven RBI, 11 runs and 11 steals for the Chatham Anglers.

Sophomore right-hander Parker Bugg  pitched for Cape Cod League champion Yarmouth-Dennis this summer, recording 15 strikeouts in 17.2 innings (12 appearances).

Junior left-hander Hunter Devall helped lead the Lakeshore Chinooks to the Northwoods League championship, posting 23 strikeouts in 18 innings of work (10 appearances). Senior catcher Kade Scivicque collected nine doubles, three homers and 14 RBI in 40 games with the St. Cloud Rox.

Sophomore right-hander Alden Cartwright made nine appearances for the Battle Creek Bombers of the Northwoods Leagues, recording two saves and 14 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. Redshirt freshman Andrew Mitchell worked 46.2 innings for Battle Creek in 16 appearances (seven starts), registering 49 strikeouts.

Redshirt freshman right-hander Jesse Stallings pitched 44.2 innings for the Acadiana Cane Cutters in the Texas Collegiate League, recording 25 strikeouts.

LSU begins its six-week fall practice session on Monday, Oct. 6. The Tigers open the 2015 season on Feb. 13 when they play host to Kansas in Alex Box Stadium.
