Discus Thrower Brown Smashes School Record
BATON ROUGE – LSU’s All-American discus thrower Rodney Brown won the men’s discus title at the USA Track & Field Throws Initiative Test Meet held in Chula Vista, California, this weekend as he smashed his own school record with a winning mark of 212 feet, 2 inches during Thursday’s preliminary round of the competition.
Brown was the top qualifier in a field of some of the nation’s top discus throwers at the college and professional levels with his school-record throw of 212-2 on Thursday afternoon.
He then took the discus title after managing a top throw of 197-3 in Saturday’s final in the event. Jared Schuurmans finished runner-up during the event with his top throw of 195-9 in the final, followed by Russ Winger in third place with a mark of 192-9 in the final and Tennessee All-American Tavis Bailey in fourth place with a throw of 183-10.
Brown’s qualifying throw of 212-2 raised his own LSU school discus record by more than one foot as he made the trip to Chula Vista for the USATF Throws Initiative Test Meet with a previous best of 210-10 that also set a meet record at the 120th Penn Relays back on April 26 during the 2014 collegiate season.
With his performance during his junior season in 2014, Brown has now raised LSU’s school record by more than three feet over the course of the 2014 outdoor season as LSU’s former national champion discus thrower John Nichols set the previous school-record mark of 209-1 during his senior season with the Tigers a quarter century ago in 1989.
