BATON ROUGE – The LSU sand volleyball program has received a National Letter of Intent from Mandi Orellana to continue her career with the Tigers as announced Friday by associate head coach Russell Brock.
Orellana, a member of the Guatemalan National Beach Volleyball Team, Dig-It Beach Volleyball Club (Guatemala) and SD Beach (San Diego) Volleyball Club, will join LSU as a freshman for the 2014-15 season.
“We are very excited to add Mandi to our sand volleyball family and our 2014 recruiting class,” Brock said. “She adds incredible domestic and international experience and elite physicality to an already talented group. She possesses great all around skills and can legitimately play any role for our program. Her dedication and athleticism are a perfect fit, and we can’t wait for her to join the rest of our team training this fall. We worked extremely hard to get Mandi during the recruiting process and are very thankful that the LSU campus, the support of our athletic department, our incredible facilities and the fun group of student-athletes proved to be exactly what she was looking for.”
Orellana [Guatemala City, Guatemala] participated in the 2012 Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Youth U19 Championships in Cypress. She also has earned seven Top 12 finishes at various North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) events from 2012-14.
Orellana has tallied a second place and fourth place finishes during the previous two U21 Central American Cups. She also won the AAU Santa Barbara Open 18s which enabled her to qualify for the 2014 Junior Olympics and Pan Pacific games. Her sister, Majo, is a professional beach volleyball player who finished fifth and ninth at the 2003 and 2007 Pan American Games, respectively..
Orellana is the sixth member of LSU’s inaugural sand volleyball recruiting class. The Tigers have already signed Lilly Kessler, Callan Molle, Carly Morris, Taylor Wilson and Riley Young which was announced in June.
