Track & Field Duo Named Academic All-Americans
BATON ROUGE – Following their selection to the Academic All-District VI First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America on May 30, LSU Track & Field’s duo of senior Joseph Caraway and sophomore Therese Jernbeck have been recognized as 2014 Capital One Academic All-Americans while leading the Tigers and Lady Tigers in the classroom.
Caraway was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team for NCAA Division I men’s cross country and track and field, while Jernbeck received her selection to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team for NCAA Division I women’s cross country and track and field with Thursday’s announcement by CoSIDA.
It marks the second-straight season in which an LSU Track & Field athlete has earned Capital One Academic All-America honors as former distance standout Laura Carleton was a first-team selection in 2013.
A native of Lacassine, Louisiana, Caraway graduated from LSU on May 17 with his degree in kinesiology after maintaining a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average during his collegiate career.
Caraway, who was LSU’s nominee for the SEC’s H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award in 2013, ended his collegiate career this season as the No. 7-ranked pole vaulter indoors in program history after clearing a PR of 17 feet, 7 inches as one of the Top 25 pole vaulters nationally for the 2014 season. He was also an NCAA semifinalist in the event outdoors a year ago, while making four-straight appearances at the NCAA East Prelim.
Caraway proved to be a leader of the Tigers in the classroom and in the community throughout his collegiate career as a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection from 2012-14 and being selected as a member of a SEC Community Service Team for men’s track and field following his senior season outdoors in 2013.
Like Caraway, Jernbeck was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VI First Team for the first time in her collegiate career while also maintaining a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in international trade and finance. Jernbeck , who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, just completed her sophomore season with the Lady Tigers as one of the SEC’s leading multi-event athletes.
