BATON ROUGE – The LSU sand volleyball team (5-9) is hosting the Battle on the Bayou Saturday at Mango’s Beach Volleyball. LSU will face UAB (3-7) at 10 a.m. and Tulane (5-5) at 4 p.m. CT.
Tulane walked away with a 3-2 win against the Tigers in their last matchup at the Green Wave’s home site, Coconut Beach. The Blazers fell 5-0 to Tulane in their face off earlier this season, and UAB and Tulane will compete at 1 p.m. between LSU’s matches.
“It’s hard to believe this is the last competition day of the season,” associate head coach Russell Brock said. “We had a great practice this morning, and everyone is excited to play at home tomorrow. We have been traveling a lot lately, and I think we are a little homesick. Hopefully, we will have a great crowd out and can feed off that energy.”
Wrapping up the season, Saturday will also serve as Senior Day for Meghan Mannari and Kaitlin Hatcher.
Mannari competed in the top spot alongside Katie Lindelow and managed an overall 14-13 record. The pair also clinched the Silver bracket title during the Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament last weekend with a 23-21, 18-21, 15-12 triumph over Grand Canyon's Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallmann.
Hatcher paired up with Helen Boyle in the court-two spot to record 11 match wins on the season, and the pair advanced to the Silver bracket semifinals during the Fiesta on Siesta Key. The day prior, the pair proved their improvement as they tallied a quick 21-14, 21-17 victory against College of Charleston’s Melissa Morello and Cara Howley, a team they fell 2-0 against at the beginning of the season during the Gamecock Invitational.
“Meghan and Kaitlin have laid such an incredible foundation and example for what it means to be an LSU sand student-athlete,” Brock said. “Without their contributions, there is no doubt in my mind that our season would not have been as successful or would have gone as smoothly as it did. I’m so grateful that they set the bar as high as they did for all senior classes to come. I really feel lucky to have had the opportunity to coach them this season.”
Mango’s is located off of South Sherwood Forest Boulevard in Baton Rouge, and admittance is free as part of the “Geaux Free” program.
The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free sand cup holder, and the first 100 will receive a free hamburger or hotdog. During the 4 p.m. match against Tulane, there will be an Easter egg hunt for children attending the match.
In LSU’s last matchup, the Tigers fell 4-1 at UL-Monroe. Briana Holman and Mimi Eugene tallied LSU’s lone point of the day on court four with a 21-14, 19-21, 15-6 third-set victory over the Warhawks’ Rachel Arnason and Alannah Cullum.
