BATON ROUGE – In the wake of a collegiate debut in which she smashed her own personal record in winning the women’s javelin title with one of the top throws in the NCAA of the 2014 season at Louisiana Tech’s Jim Mize Invitational on Saturday, Lady Tiger rookie Rebekah Wales was named Tuesday as the SEC Women’s Co-Freshman of the Week.
Wales threw a series-best of 166 feet, 11 inches in her collegiate debut to take the title by more than 14 feet over the second-place mark of 152-9 by sophomore teammate Mayme Cook.
That effort moved Wales to the top of the charts in the SEC rankings as the league’s No. 1-ranked javelin thrower for 2014 after the opening weekend of the outdoor season. She also emerged from the competition as the No. 6-ranked javelin thrower in the NCAA among all classifications and the nation’s No. 1-ranked freshman with her debut performance.
Wales entered the competition with a previous personal best of 158-3 that she set during her senior season at West Monroe High School in 2013, but shattered her personal best by nearly nine feet in Saturday’s event with her top mark of 166-11. That mark tops the SEC rankings by more than 12 feet as Missouri’s Hailey Twietmeyer follows in the No. 2 spot with her season-opener of 154-3.
Wales looks to continue her momentum as she competes in Austin, Texas, this weekend with the rest of her Tiger and Lady Tiger teammates at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays that is set to begin for the teams at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas on Thursday. The meet runs through Saturday as most of the Tigers and Lady Tigers will make their outdoor debuts for the first time in 2014.
