Notes on the Tigers
LSU posted a 2-0-1 SEC series victory over Georgia last weekend at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … the teams played to a 2-2 tie in 13 innings on Sunday, as the game had to be stopped to allow Georgia time to catch its commercial airline flight home … Sunday’s game marked LSU’s first tie since the Tigers and Georgia played to a 10-10 deadlock in 12 innings on April 20, 2008 in the original Alex Box Stadium … LSU recorded an 9-0 victory over South Alabama last Wednesday and a 4-0 win over Georgia on Friday, marking the Tigers’ eighth and ninth shutouts of the season … the LSU record for most shutouts in a season is 10 by the 1996 national championship club … Saturday’s win over Georgia was career victory No. 1,199 for LSU coach Paul Mainieri, now in his 32nd season as a collegiate coach … with one more win, Mainieri, a member of the 2014 ABCA Hall of Fame induction class, will become only the ninth NCAA Division I active coach to have 1,200 career victories … LSU left-hander Jared Poche’, a native of Lutcher, La., earned his first career SEC victory on Saturday with an exceptional performance against Georgia … he worked 8.2 innings, limiting the Bulldogs to one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts … Poche’ fired 5.1 hitless innings before Georgia chopped an infield single in the sixth … he threw 102 pitches and recorded the longest outing by an LSU pitcher this season … Poche’ improved his record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.91 in 33 innings with nine walks and 24 strikeouts … LSU all-American right-hander Aaron Nola defeated Georgia on Friday, blanking the Bulldogs through 6.2 innings while allowing two hits with eight strikeouts … Nola is 5-0 this season with a 0.22 ERA in 40.1 innings with eight walks and 56 strikeouts … sophomore rightfielder Mark Laird collected six hits in 14 at-bats in the Tigers’ four games last week, batting .429 with one double, one RBI, two runs, three walks, one steal and a .529 on-base percentage … senior third baseman Christian Ibarra hit .400 in the Georgia series (4-for-10) with one double, one RBI and two runs, while senior leftfielder Sean McMullen batted .357 (5-for-14) against the Bulldogs with two doubles, one triple, one RBI and one run scored … junior left-hander Zac Person made two relief appearances in the Georgia series, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings with one walk and seven strikeouts … junior right-hander Joe Broussard appeared in all three games against the Bulldogs and earned his fifth save of the year in Game 2 on Saturday, preserving a 2-1 win by striking out the final UGA batter in the ninth inning with a runner at first base … Broussard has allowed no runs and just three hits this season in 10.1 innings (13 appearances) as the Tigers’ closer.
