LSU’s Saturday doubleheader at #3 Vanderbilt ended a rigorous stretch of 10 games in 11 days for the Tigers … LSU posted an 8-2 mark over that period with the only losses coming at Vanderbilt … LSU had won seven consecutive SEC road series prior to dropping two games to the Commodores over the weekend; the Tigers’ last SEC road series loss prior to last weekend came on April 20-22, 2012 at Kentucky … junior right-hander Aaron Nola tied his career high with 12 strikeouts in Friday’s win at Vanderbilt … Nola was not involved in the decision of a classic pitchers’ duel with Vanderbilt’s Tyler Beede, but he limited the Commodores to one run on six hits in 6.2 innings with two walks and 12 Ks … Nola allowed an earned run in the second inning of Friday’s game, ending a streak of 54 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run … Nola had last given up an earned run on May 23, 2013 against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament … sophomore centerfielder Andrew Stevenson’s hitting streak ended at 17 games after the second game of the doubleheader at Vanderbilt … Stevenson provided the game-winning hit in Friday’s victory at Vanderbilt, a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead … Stevenson leads the Tigers in hitting on the year, batting .393 with four triples, 13 RBI and 14 runs … relievers Zac Person, Parker Bugg and Joe Broussard were instrumental in the Tigers’ 4-2 victory at Vanderbilt on Friday … Person relieved starter Aaron Nola with two out in the seventh inning and recorded a strikeout with a runner at second base to end the inning … Person eventually was credited with the win, his first as an LSU pitcher, as the Tigers scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth … Bugg entered the game to start the bottom of the eighth and allowed only an unearned run in 1.1 innings with no walks and two strikeouts … Broussard entered the game in the ninth with one out and the bases empty and struck out the next two Commodore hitters to earn his third save of the season … Broussard has a 0.00 ERA in 8.1 innings (nine appearances) with one walk and seven strikeouts, and Person has a 0.00 ERA in 6.1 innings (nine appearances) with two walks and nine strikeouts … Bugg has a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings (nine appearances) with no walks and 12 strikeouts .. LSU recorded an 8-0 victory over Southern last Wednesday, marking the Tigers’ seventh shutout of the season … the LSU record for most shutouts in a season is 10 by the 1996 national championship club.
