BATON ROUGE, La. - The No. 24 LSU men’s tennis team (3-2) completed a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Dub Robinson Stadium shutting out North Florida (1-4) 4-0 and Liberty (2-2) 7-0.

To begin the first match against North Florida, No. 60 Boris Arias and Chris Simpson defeated Norbert Nemcsek and Jack Findel-Hawkins 6-5(3) to set the tone for the Tigers. Sophmore Andrew Korinek and freshman Justin Butsch then dominated Pablo Tellez and Zachary Goldberg, winning 6-0, to take the doubles point and the lead into singles.

In singles, Arias quickly defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1 on court four. Korinek and Simpson both followed winning 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively on court two and one.

“It was a good team effort today,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “North Florida was a very good doubles team. It took everything we had to get that (doubles) point, and I think it was a big momentum point for us. In singles, a few guys were able to dominate, so that kind of took the pressure off of some of the other courts. I thought the guys did a good job of closing out North Florida.”

To begin the second match against Liberty, LSU dominated in doubles. No. 60 Simpson and Arias took down No. 26 Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero, 6-1. On court two, No. 46 Tam Trinh and Eric Perez defeated Egon Samaai and Jorge Boda 6-2.

“We jumped on Liberty quickly in doubles,” Brown said. “In singles, we had a couple of guys that were able to make quick work that took the pressure off of other guys.”

No. 72 junior Chris Simpson has clinched all three wins for LSU this season. Simpson defeated Shea Thomas of Liberty 6-1, 6-3 to score the fourth point for the Tigers. Simpson also defeated North Florida’s Caio Gomes for the Tigers fourth point. In January, Simpson was the key in LSU’s 4-3 win over Rice.

Butsch and redshirt freshman John Michael Busch recorded their first singles wins in the dual season. Butsch defeated Liberty’s Stan Vaughan in three sets after losing the first. Busch defeated Liberty’s Josiah Boda 6-2, 6-1.

“It was good for Justin to find a way to win today,” Brown said. “It’s nice to see John Michael get his first win as a Tiger. He works really hard and good things happen for guys like that.”

In the evening match against Liberty, Arias won his first set against Egon Samaai 6-3, but trailed 5-0 in the second set. Arias completed a comeback to win the match 6-5 off of a 7-5 tiebreaker.LSU invited Southern Miss and Jackson State to Dub Robinson Stadium on Sunday for another double header. Action starts at noon vs. Southern Miss. The first serve Jackson State is slated for 4 p.m.
