BATON ROUGE – As they do each and every season, the LSU Track & Field teams will kick off their 2014 indoor season this weekend ranked among the top teams in college track and field as they head to Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday to compete at the Auburn Indoor Invitational that will be held at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Both are ranked among the Top 10 teams in the Track & Field News Preseason Dual Meet Rankings released on Tuesday of this week as the Lady Tigers are ranked No. 3 and the Tigers are ranked No. 6 nationally.

LSU’s women posted a perfect 7-0 record in dual-meet competition a year ago to claim Track & Field News’ dual meet national championship as the No. 1-ranked dual meet team in the NCAA for both the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons. The Tigers also return a well-rounded squad that was also strong in dual-meet competition a year ago.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association also released its preseason Top 25 power rankings this week as the Lady Tigers are ranked No. 8 and the Tigers are ranked No. 25 to open up the season.

The USTFCCCA Top 25 power rankings are based strictly on the national descending order lists of performances in each event being contested at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Performances have been taken from the 2013 season along with the national descending order list from the current season to compile the USTFCCCA Top 25 preseason power rankings.

The Lady Tigers have proven themselves as an NCAA championship contender indoors in recent years as they have taken home a third-place team finish in each of the last four years at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Tigers ended the 2013 indoor season with a 15th-place finish in the final men’s team standings at the NCAA Championships.
