KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - The LSU men's tennis team won five singles matches and three doubles matches on the second day of competition Monday at the Key Biscayne Collegiate Invitational at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.
LSU played in two rounds of doubles matches Monday morning and one round of singles matches Monday afternoon.
“After the first doubles this morning, we really picked up our level for the second doubles and singles,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “It was another great day for conditioning with temperature reaching 83 degrees and humid. We are looking to follow up today with an enthusiastic last day of competition.”
No. 46 sophomore Tam Trinh and freshman Eric Perez swept Denver in doubles matches. Trinh and Perez defeated Alex Clinkenbeard and Yannik James 6-3 and followed with a 6-5 victory over Aidan Talcott and William Ro. No. 60 junior Chris Simpson and sophomore Boris Arias defeated Michigan’s Alex Buzzi and Kevin Wong, 6-3.
No. 72 junior Chris Simpson, sophomores Harrison Kennedy and Andrew Korinek and freshmen Justin Butsch and John Michael Busch each finished the day with singles wins.
Throughout the months of January and February, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) will use an experimental scoring format. Each singles match is two out of three sets, will use no-ad scoring and will have tiebreaker at 5-all in each set. Doubles matches are one set to six, with no-ad scoring and a tiebreaker at 5-all. After a team wins two doubles matches, the remaining doubles match won’t be completed.
LSU will take to the courts at 9 a.m. CT Tuesday for the final day of the tournament. Follow the Tigers' progress on Twitter @LSUTennis and www.Facebook.com/lsutennis.
