LEXINGTON, Ky. – LSU middle blocker Briana Holman not only secured American Volleyball Coaches Association [AVCA] All-South Region honors but was selected as the region’s freshman of the year as announced Tuesday by the governing body of collegiate volleyball coaches.

The Tigers have tallied 13 AVCA All-South Region honorees since 2005. Holman is the first player in program history to pick up the AVCA’s Region Freshman of the Year award.

“We’re extremely proud of the impact that Briana had on our program during her freshman season,” head coach Fran Flory said. “She played a key role in our program’s return to the NCAA Tournament. There aren’t many players that could step in and handle the load that we asked Briana to carry. She played a key role in all facets of the game, and this type of award is certainly a springboard for her going forward into the offseason. We look forward to seeing her growth and development in our program.”

Holman, an All-SEC and All-SEC Freshmen Team pick, ripped 391 kills at a 3.01 per set average and connected for a .327 hitting percentage. The .327 hitting ratio was fourth among SEC freshmen and rated 12th overall. She cranked 15 of her 24 double digit kill performances against AVCA regionally ranked opponents which included a season’s best 20 kills at No. 20 Kentucky (Nov. 10) and a season-high .786 hitting clip (11 kills, 0 errors, 14 swings) at No. 7 Florida (Nov. 22).

Holman has racked up a SEC-leading 1.54 blocks good enough for sixth nationally – second among freshmen. She is the third player in program history to garner 200 total blocks during a single season joining Stacey Samuels (1985 & 1986) and Lisa Smith (1986). The Texas native also provided four double-doubles with kills and blocks – the last LSU player to record a double-double with kills and blocks was AVCA All-American Brittnee Cooper in 2009. Her 14 blocks during the Miami (Sept. 13) and Tennessee (Nov. 17) matches were the most by a LSU player since Ivana Kuzmic’s 2006 AVCA All-American season.

LSU has earned 190 victories sparked by five 20-win seasons to go along with seven SEC Western Division titles since 2005. The Tigers also are one of 29 programs to appear in at least seven NCAA Tournaments during the last nine seasons.
