BATON ROUGE – LSU will have three former All-American players with status on the LPGA Tour in 2014 as Megan McChrystal and Katy Harris earned “category” rights Sunday at the conclusion of the 90-hole qualifying event at LPGA International in Daytona Beach.
They will join Austin Ernst, who qualified for the tour at the 2012 qualifying event and kept her card and Category 1 status by making the top 80 in the money list this past year.
With the top 20 earning Category 12 status and players 21-45 earning Category 17 status which will determine which tournaments and how many players will be have spots able to enter in 2014, McChrystal had a chance to get a top 20 spot when she tied at 6-under par for the 19th spot, thus creating a four-for-two playoff for the 19th and 20th cards.
McChrystal finished out of the two spots but will have status in the second group of qualifiers along with Harris, who rallied from 56th place to 44th place with a 5-round total of even par 360. Both McChrystal and Harris won on the LPGA’s developmental tour, the Symetra Tour, this past season as did Melissa Eaton, who missed the 72 hole cut after Saturday’s play.
Harris played at LSU from 1998-2001 and McChrystal on the 2008-11 teams.
