Women's Tennis Fall Wrap-Up
BATON ROUGE -- The LSU Women’s Tennis team completed its 2013 fall season with 26 singles wins, a five-win improvement from the 21 fall season wins during head coach Julia Sell’s first season. Gabrielle Otero and Ella Taylor led the team with five singles victories each.
“This has been the kind of fall where I feel very fortunate to be a coach,” Sell said. “We played some great tennis, made big strides in our games and had a lot of fun getting to know all the new faces on our roster.”
The Lady Tigers participated in three tournaments this fall, beginning with the Atlanta Classic, a three-day tournament where they won a total of 13 singles matches. This tournament was highlighted by Noel Scott’s victory over No. 67 Kendal Woodard of Georgia Tech 6-4, 6-3. Scott’s victory over Woodard was one of the Lady Tigers’ four singles wins against Georgia Tech in the Atlanta Classic. Georgia Tech finished the 2013 spring season ranked No. 21.
During the ITA Southern Regional in October, the team earned five victories. Scott won two matches, including a dominating match against South Alabama’s Laura Valkova 6-1, 6-1 and an exciting three-setter against ULM’s Sophie Rufyikiri 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
LSU competed in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic to conclude the fall season. During this tournament, the team notched 13 victories, highlighted by Scott’s thrilling three-set victory over No. 111 Veronica Corning of Northwestern 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Taylor and Skylar Holloway added two victories during the final fall tournament, with Holloway coming in second in the Mari Mueller Draw.
LSU proved to be strong in doubles as well, garnering 12 victories during the season. Morton/Taylor led the team with four victories. Scott/Owens and Otero/Holloway added three victories to the Lady Tigers, highlighted by Otero/Holloway’s 8-0 domination over Furman’s Karlee Bryde/Amanda Murray during the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in November.
“This team has some of the best chemistry that I have ever seen,” Sell said. “I am looking forward to how that will translate into our spring season.”
The Lady Tigers open the spring season on Jan. 19 as they host a doubleheader against Nicholls State and Southern at ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium.
