BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After combining for 39 points in her LSU debut weekend, junior guard DaShawn Harden has been named the first Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2013-14 season, the league office announced on Monday.

Harden, a native of Olathe, Kan., led the Lady Tigers to a pair of wins in the preseason WNIT. She is the first LSU player to claim an SEC Player of the Week honor since LaSondra Barrett on Jan. 23, 2011.

Harden finished 8-of-14 from the floor with four threes in a 20-point debut against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night. The 20 points were the most by an LSU player in a debut since freshman Seimone Augustus scored 27 at Arizona on Nov. 22, 2002.

Two days later, Harden was the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer again with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and an impressive five steals in an 80-64 win over Saint Joseph’s in the WNIT quarterfinals.

Harden came to LSU by way of Johnson County Community College where she was a first-team All-American and the East Jayhawk Conference most valuable player last season.

It’s the first time since the 2001-02 season that LSU has scored 80 or more points in consecutive games to start a season. The Lady Tigers have advanced to the semifinals of the preseason WNIT and will take on either No. 5 Louisville or Quinnipiac. Those two teams face off tonight in Louisville.

Should Louisville win, the Lady Tigers will travel to face the Cardinals at 6 p.m. CT Thursday. Should Quinnipiac pull the upset, LSU would host the WNIT semifinal at 7 p.m. CT Thursday.
