ATHENS, Ga. – The LSU men’s tennis team had a strong showing on day one of the 2013 Bulldog Scramble hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., including an upset victory by LSU’s Tam Trinh and Eric Perez over the No. 2 doubles pair in the country in Ben Wagland and Hernus Pieters of Georgia.

“It was a great start to the tournament with Eric Perez and Tam Trinh’s big win,” head coach Jeff Brown said. “The other doubles teams played well and got wins. Chris Simpson and Andrew Korinek both played at a high level to win twice each and Justin Butsch and Eric Perez worked hard for some additional wins.”

The morning started off with doubles, as the Tigers were victorious in all three of their matchups. The biggest victory of the day came from the LSU duo of Trinh and Perez as they defeated No. 2 Wagland and Pieters of Georgia 6-5(2). Chris Simpson and Boris Arias emerged with a 6-4 victory over Ryan Smith and Rhys Johnson of Vanderbilt. To wrap up doubles play for the morning, LSU’s Andrew Korinek and Justin Butsch dealt a 6-3 loss to Furman’s Joel Cook and Juan Sheppard.

For singles, Perez picked up his first victory as a Tiger as he took down Cook of Furman in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4. Also coming away with a victory was Korinek as he defeated Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito 7-5, 6-3. LSU’s No. 29 Simpson continued his strong play in the fall with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win against Alex Ghilea of Oklahoma.

Trinh was defeated with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 loss to Luke Synn of Furman. LSU’s Arias was also defeated following a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Anton Kovirgin of Vanderbilt. LSU’s Butsch suffered a 7-6, 6-4 loss to Suresh Eswaran of Vanderbilt.

Later, No. 29 Simpson cruised with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Vanderbilt’s Ryan Smith. LSU’s Korinek came away with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 victory over Vanderbilt’s Jeff Offerdahl. LSU’s Butsch also was victorious as he took down Furman’s Sheppard 6-3, 6-4.

To finish off the day, Arias was dealt a 6-3, 6-1 loss to No. 72 Pieters of Georgia. Perez also suffered a loss as he fell 6-1, 6-2 to Austin Siegel of Oklahoma. LSU sophomore Harrison Kennedy was also defeated as he lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Cole Fiegel of Georgia Tech.
