BATON ROUGE, La. -- Game 1 of the LSU Baseball Purple-Gold World Series begins at 7 p.m. Friday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The three-game intrasquad series signals the conclusion of LSU’s six-week fall practice session.

Game 2 is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Game 3 starts at 4 p.m. Sunday. All games will be seven innings, and they are open to the public with free admission.

“We’ve had a very productive fall session, and Purple-Gold World Series is an event that our players really embrace,” said eighth-year LSU head coach Paul Mainieri, who directed the Tigers in 2013 to a berth in the College World Series, the SEC Western Division championship and the SEC Tournament title. “It’s an opportunity for our team to compete in a gameday atmosphere, as we try to replicate much of what they’ll experience in the spring. We encourage our fans to come out to ‘The Box’ this weekend and get a look at what we think will be a very talented and dynamic ball club.”

The weekend event features former LSU players serving as guest coaches. Tyler Hanover (infielder, 2009-12) will manage the Purple squad, and he will be assisted by Micah Gibbs (catcher, 2008-10) and Anthony Ranaudo (pitcher, 2008-10), along with LSU strength coach Jeremy Phillips.

The Gold team will be managed by Chris McGhee (infielder, 2006-09), and he will be assisted by Sean Ochinko (catcher/1B, 2007-09) and Michael Hollander (infielder, 2005-08), along with assistant strength coach Travis Roy.

“This is an honor to be able to coach this group of young men,” Hanover said. “I hope the weekend is fun and competitive, and I hope I can teach the players something while experiencing the game from a different point of view.”

“To be a part of anything involved with LSU baseball is an honor,” said McGhee, “so for Coach Mainieri to give us a chance to be a part of a very important piece of the development of this team at the conclusion of the fall is very special. Hopefully, the games will be as competitive as they have been in the past and we have a lot of fun this weekend.”

The Purple team will start junior right-hander Aaron Nola on the mound in Game 1 on Friday, while the Gold will counter with junior left-hander Cody Glenn.

Game 2 on Saturday will match Purple freshman left-hander Jared Poche’ versus Gold junior left-hander Kyle Bouman. Purple senior right-hander Kurt McCune will start Game 3 Sunday against Gold junior right-hander Joe Broussard.

“We’ve accomplished a great deal this fall, and we’ve learned a lot about the players that can play significant roles for us this spring,” Mainieri said. “We still have much work to do before our season opener on February 14 (vs. UNO), but I’m very pleased with the work ethic and chemistry developing within our team.”
