BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open the 2013-14 season with back-to-back days of competition in the LSU Natatorium against Southeastern Conference foes Georgia and Arkansas.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will face Georgia Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) while the Lady Tigers will compete against Arkansas on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The meet against Arkansas has been moved up 30 minutes from the originally scheduled 11 a.m.

“Opening up our dual meet season against the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs will put our men and women in a place to try and compete at an elite level right away,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “There’s not a lot of room for error this weekend so we have to be ready. Arkansas coming in the next day prepares us for Southeastern Conference Championships and NCAA Championships.”

The full squad will face tough competition when they welcome Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs are the defending Southeastern Conference and NCAA champions. The men are also coming off a great season after placing third at the SEC Championships and 10th at the NCAA Championships last March.

The Arkansas women are coming to Baton Rouge after placing sixth at the SEC championships and 26th at the NCAA Championships last season.

The LSU men’s team returns five members who qualified for the NCAA Championships, including NCAA All-American Honorable Mention swimmer and captain, Frank Greeff.

Junior Michael Young, a 2013 NCAA qualifier will also be looked to for his experience in the pool. On the diving team, senior Sean McKinney looks to final again at the SEC Championships and return to the NCAA Championships.

The women’s team also returns five members who qualified for the NCAA championships, highlighted by SEC Freshmen Diver of the Year and two-time NCAA Honorable-Mention diver Cassie Weil.

The Lady Tigers will be led by to two-time NCAA qualifier and the captain of this year’s team, Amber Carter. Senior Torey Bussey will also be relied on heavily as she looks to return to the NCAA Championships for a fourth consecutive year.

“We’re excited to finally get an opportunity to perform,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “This is going to be the first opportunity to do that against great competition. We use this as a building block to compete and defend our pool. It’s all building up to the Southeastern Conference and NCAA Championships.”

In dual meet competition, events will be scored as follows: In individual competition, nine points are awarded for a first place finish, four for a second place finish, three for a third place finish, two for a fourth place finish and one point for a fifth place finish. There can be no more than three scorers per team.

In relay competition, 11 points are awarded for a first place finish, four points for a second place finish and two points for a third place finish. There can only be two scorers per team.

In diving, nine points are awarded for a first place finish, four for a second place finish, three for a third place finish, two for a fourth place finish and one point for a fifth place finish.

Saturday’s meet includes one of the many promotions that will be featured throughout the season. All fans will be asked to enter their name with a chance to win a football helmet signed by coach Les Miles. The winner will be announced after the match and you must be present to win.
