BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU middle blocker Briana Holman picked up the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Week award Monday as announced by the league office. For Holman, it’s her third career SEC weekly award. She joins former AVCA All-American Marina Skender as the only players in program history to earn the honor during their freshman season.
“This is another great honor for Briana who has worked extremely hard with her setter Malorie Pardo to develop their chemistry, connection and creativity,” head coach Fran Flory said. “She continues to bring a high level to the practice court which translates to her continued success during matches. Briana has opened up so many things to allow our offense to become multi-dimensional. If she continues to play at this type of level, we are going to be extremely difficult to defend.”
Holman played a big part in LSU’s perfect week which saw three victories over a five-day span. She belted 3.83 kills per set on a .417 hitting percentage and secured 1.50 blocks per set to maintain her grasp on the SEC’s top spot.
Holman connected for 18 kills which included a perfect 4-for-4 mark during the deciding fifth set to spark LSU’s 3-2 comeback win at Texas A&M in front of an ESPNU national television audience. The 18 kills was Holman’s second-highest career mark. She also tacked on seven blocks which enabled the Tigers to hold A&M to a .103 hitting clip over the final three sets.
Holman tacked on 15 and 13 kills, respectively, in win over Ole Miss and Mississippi State. She has provided double digit kills in 13 of her last 14 matches and tallied five-plus blocks in 11 of her 16 appearances.
LSU travels to Auburn Friday for the first of two meetings with the Tigers this season. First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m., and the match will televised by Fox Sports Network and SportSouth. Free live audio and live stats also will be provided inside the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.
