TUSACOOLSA, Ala. – LSU No. 29 junior Chris Simpson advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw on the second day of the ITA Southern Regional hosted by the University of Alabama at the UA Varsity Courts in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
“It was a good day overall,” assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “Obviously Chris Simpson had a good day. His intensity and focus is something that we want all of our guys to take into every match and it has paid off for him.”
In the fourth round of the singles main draw, Simpson won a tightly contested match in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow as he took down Ole Miss’ Stefan Lindmark 7-6(5), 7-6(4). He will square off against No. 65 William Kallberg of Ole Miss tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.
The morning started with doubles as four Tiger duos took the courts. LSU’s Chris Simpson and Boris Arias, the No. 3 ranked duo at the tournament, took down UAB’s Lucas Dirube and Rafael Rondino 8-5 to advance to the third round.
LSU’s three other doubles pairs fell in the second round. Andrew Korinek and Tam Trinh dropped their match to Auburn’s Hayes Brewer and Andrew Goodwin 8-3. Later, LSU’s redshirt freshman duo of John Michael Busch and Eric Perez fell to Yates Johnson and Hunter Johnson of Louisiana-Lafayette 8-4. The Tigers pair of Harrison Kennedy and Justin Butsch were eliminated after an 8-5 loss to Ole Miss’ Zach Wilder and Johan Backstrom.
In the third round of the singles main draw, LSU’s Simpson and Korinek won their matches to advance to the fourth round. No. 29 Simpson took down Mississippi State’s Robin Haden 6-3, 7-6(5) and Korinek came away with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over New Orleans’ Blake Gregor. Also in the third round, LSU’s Trinh fell to No. 112 Dominik Koepfer of Tulane 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Arias also suffered a defeat, losing 6-0, 6-2 to Dennis Lengsfeld of Auburn.
Also in the fourth round of the singles main draw, LSU’s Korinek suffered a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Auburn’s Lukas Ollert.
In the second round of the consolation singles draw, LSU’s Kennedy fell to Manuel Belda of South Alabama 3-6, 6-0, 10-4. Redshirt freshman Perez was also eliminated after a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 loss to Iain Sneddon of Tulane. LSU’s Busch withdrew from his consolation match.
