TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The LSU men’s tennis team had a successful first day despite the heat at the ITA Southern Regional hosted by Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the UA Varsity Courts. The Tigers had both of their doubles pairs advance to the second round and had four advance through the first two rounds of the singles main draw.
“As a team, we played well,” head coach Jeff Brown said. “The guys that advanced overcame good opponents and the heat. We need to recover as much as possible for a higher level of opponents tomorrow.”
The Tigers started the morning off with a doubles matchup between LSU’s Justin Butsch and Harrison Kennedy and Rui Silva and Blake Gregor of New Orleans. LSU’s duo dominated the match and came away with a 8-2 victory. They will square off against Louisiana-Lafayette’s duo of Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson in the second round tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Later, LSU’s pair of Andrew Korinek and Tam Trinh won a tightly contested match against South Alabama’s Gerhard Gruindelingh and Manuel Belda 8-7(3). They will face Auburn’s Dennis Lengsfeld and Lukas Ollert tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT.
In singles, Korinek had a 6-4, 6-0 victory over South Alabama’s Juan Troglia. Butsch also came away with a victory, taking down Michael Binder of New Orleans in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. LSU’s Trinh advanced to the second round as well with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Samford’s Fares Kilani.
Redshirt freshman Eric Perez fell in straight sets to Tulane’s Chi-Shan Jao 6-3, 6-3. LSU’s John Michael Busch was also defeated as he was dealt a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Timo Kranz of New Orleans.
In second round singles action, No. 29 junior Chris Simpson, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, dominated his match and dealt a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Tulane’s Cedric Rutsaert. In the third round tomorrow, he will face Robin Haden of Mississippi State at 11:30 a.m. CT. Korinek came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tulane’s Sebastian Rey. He will face Blake Gregor of New Orleans at 10 a.m. CT in the third round tomorrow. Sophomore Boris Arias also advanced to the third round after a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over William Huyton of Louisiana-Lafayette. He will square off against Dennis Lengsfeld of Auburn tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT. Sophomore Trinh had a clutch victory over South Alabama’s Gruindelingh. After dropping a close first set 7-6(4), Trinh fired back with a clutch 7-6(6) second set victory. In the decisive third set, Trinh emerged with a 6-2 win to take the match 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-2. He will square off against Tulane’s No. 112 Dominik Koepfer tomorrow in the third round at 11:30 a.m. CT.
Sophomore Kennedy was defeated after he retired in the third set against Dan Cochrane of Auburn. Cochrane was ahead 6-2, 5-5 at the time. Butsch’s run in the main draw came to an end with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to No. 40 Malte Stropp of Mississippi State.
