HANAHAN, S.C. – Senior Ali Lucas and freshman Caroline Nistrup helped the 22nd-ranked LSU women’s golf team to a solid opening round in the 20-team Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Golf Course Sunday.

The Lady Tigers opened with a 7-over round of 295 to stand in a tie for ninth place after the opening day, tied with Auburn. Mississippi State opened the event with a 6-under round of 282, three shots better than South Carolina and Clemson at 285.

Lucas, from Crowley, had a great opening to her senior season, with nine front-side pars, before playing the first five holes of the final nine in 1-over par. But then on the par-5 15th hole, Lucas played outstanding golf, scoring an eagle on the hole to get back to 1-under and then played the last three holes in even par to get home in 71.

It was one of six eagles on the day from the 108-player field and puts Lucas in a tie for 10th place, five shots out of the lead of Brittany Marchand of North Carolina State and Ally McDonald of Mississippi State.

Nistrup had a strong finish in her LSU debut, posting birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to get back to 1-over par 73 for the day and in a group tied for 26th place. Nistrup had three birdies on the round.

The Lady Tigers would also count in the play five, count four scores format, a 3-over 75 by junior Madelene Sagstrom and a 4-over 76 from senior Lindsay Gahm.

The second round is scheduled for Monday with the final round on Tuesday. Live scoring for the round will be available on LSUsports.net through Golfstat.com. Follow LSU women’s golf on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and on Twitter @LSUwomensgolf.
