BATON ROUGE – LSU’s student-athletes started off the 2013-14 year with the annual “Back to School Bash” hosted by the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program and the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.

This year, the event was held before LSU’s soccer 6-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday. Student-athletes and coaches from all 20 of LSU’s varsity sports along with staff and administration came together to kickoff the school year.

“The Back to School Bash has always been something that I look forward to going to when I return to school,” women’s basketball forward Sheila Boykin said. “There is nothing like being around your LSU family and being able to support the soccer team makes it even more special this year.”

In addition, letter jackets were handed out to those student-athletes who received their first Letter Award by the LSU National L Club.

“It was a great experience to be able to get my letterman jacket with my fellow student-athletes at the Back to School Bash,” men’s basketball guard Malik Morgan said. “It also was great to take a picture with all the other athletes who received them and then stay and watch the soccer team.”

Tuesday also marked the first “Tiger Nights” of the year. “Tiger Nights”, developed by LSU’s Marketing and Promotions Department, is a program that emphasizes student-athletes supporting other teams throughout the school year at designated events. The first annual “Tiger Nights” winner was the softball team.

“For the first Tiger Nights to be at our game and for all of the student athletes to be there, playing at home was a little more special than usual,” soccer goalie Megan Kinneman said. “It was great to have all of the other teams out supporting us and helping us get the season started off strong.”
