BATON ROUGE – With the help of close to 200 LSU student-athletes, the new President and Chancellor F. King Alexander, LSU’s Residential Life and various other campus organizations, more than 2,500 students moved into their campus dorms on Thursday in preparation for the 2013 fall semester which begins next week.

“It was Dr. Alexander’s idea to get everybody, athletes and regular students alike, to help people move in,” quarterback Zach Mettenberger said. “It’s really a great thing. It is showing these incoming freshmen that they have a lot of support from fifth-years, juniors, regular students and athletes. We are just trying to make the transition a little easier for everybody.”

With move-in starting at 7:30 a.m., 13 of LSU’s athletic teams took the opportunity to greet the incoming students and help them move into their dorm rooms throughout the morning.

“It is great what we are doing, helping the incoming students move in,” forward Johnny O'Bryant III said. “It gives us a chance to reach them before they step into a classroom, and it is great that we are able to be the first people they see when they come on campus.”

Student-athletes helped unload cars, greet the incoming students and their families, move things into dorm rooms and much more.

“It’s a great thing to have our student-athletes help welcome our new students to campus,” Assistant Director for Staffing and Organizational Development Bill Mattera said. “Their presence was an exciting part of this process and provides us some much-needed support.  Our new students love the opportunity to engage with them outside the student section.”
