MIAMI – After going through nine days of practices, the LSU women’s basketball team will embark on an 11-day exhibition foreign tour of Spain with stops in Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Madrid beginning with a commercial flight from Miami to Barcelona on Sunday night.

The Lady Tigers, coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the spring, face Team France AMW All-Stars at noon CT Tuesday and noon CT Wednesday (7 p.m. Central European time zone) in Barcelona. LSU was scheduled to play the Netherlands National Team but they withdrew from competition due to injuries.

Team France dropped a 75-57 exhibition to Notre Dame last week and the French were scheduled to take on Georgia Tech. LSU’s other contests will come on 1 p.m. CT Saturday, Aug. 17 and 1 p.m. CT Sunday, Aug. 18 against collegiate Spanish teams in Alicante.

NCAA guidelines allow teams to take a foreign trip once every four years.

For a group of 10 players and the staff, the next 11 days will be a trip of a lifetime and for most the first time they have been out of the country let alone overseas. It will be a chance for LSU to bond as a team, experience a new culture and take in the sights and sounds of Spain while getting a leg up on game competition before practice officially begins in October.

Head coach Nikki Caldwell’s Lady Tigers return four starters from last year’s Sweet 16 team led by the reigning Southeastern Conference scoring champion in Theresa Plaisance, who was recently overseas in Russia helping USA Basketball to a World University Games gold medal.

“Just the opportunity to play overseas with LSU on our jerseys, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Plaisance. “A lot of us when we are done at LSU will be playing overseas. It’s a good chance to see a new culture and what the international game is like. It’s a great advantage.”

Fellow senior guard Jeanne Kenney anchors what will be a backcourt full of depth that welcomes three freshmen on the trip – Rina Hill, Raigyne Moncrief and Jasmine Rhodes. Kenney says the past nine days and the trip has given the Lady Tigers a chance to get acclimated to game speed again.

“One of the big differences of last year’s team and this year’s team is the tempo,” said Kenney. “It is fast paced and that is due to the number of guards we have. Our post players have done a good job keeping up. I am excited for this opportunity to go to Spain and see what we can do against other teams. I can’t wait to see all of the sights.”

LSU flew from New Orleans to Miami Sunday afternoon and the Lady Tigers were scheduled to take an 8-hour flight across the Atlantic to Barcelona where they will land at approximately 9:30 a.m. CET (2:30 a.m. CT).

The first day in Barcelona calls for a sightseeing tour at Barrio Gotico and much of the 1992 Olympic Games venues. The team will indulge in a welcome dinner at La Tramoia and observe a flamenco show.
