BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU had 26 of its student-athletes become 2013 Southeastern Conference First-Year Honor Roll recipients Monday as announced by the league office.

The swimming and diving program highlighted the list with six representatives highlighted by Danielle Stirrat, who set a new program record in the 200-meter backstroke (1:55.21) at the SEC Championships.

Five track and field student-athletes collected the first-year honor roll award. In 2013, Chase August raced a lifetime personal record of 1:57.86 in the 800 meters at the LSU Relays. Lady Tiger multi-event athlete Therese Jernbeck was the No. 4 ranked SEC freshmen in the heptathlon during the outdoor season.

All three freshmen gymnasts received first-year honor roll recognition. Randii Wyrick earned First-Team All-America honors in 2013 after she tallied a career-high 9.925 at the NCAA Championships. Jessica Savona was crowned SEC Floor Exercise champion and an All-SEC member when she scored a career-high 9.95 to take home a share of the title at the SEC Championship. Michelle Gauthier saw action in several meets as an exhibition performer, scoring a 9.70 on beam at North Carolina State.

Fernanda Piña was one of two soccer players on the Honor Roll. She was the team’s leading goal and point scorer on the pitch.

A pair of volleyball players were named to the list which included Cati Leak, who was one of four Tigers to play in every match last season.

Two women’s tennis student-athletes earned a spot on the honor roll. Ella Taylor led the squad with 14 dual match singles victories which included five SEC wins while primarily playing the No. 3 singles position.

Both women’s golf freshmen, Elise Bradley and Nadine Dreher, were among the honorees. Dreher recently wrapped up a team runner-up finish playing for her native Austria at the European Women’s Amateur Team Championships in England.

Alayna Falcon tallied a .333 batting average as a pinch hitter in her first season as a Tiger while being named to the SEC First Year Honor Roll.

Jamie Keehn was football’s selection to the list. Six of his 12 punts in 2012 traveled over 50 yards which included a 58-yard boot versus Clemson during the the 2012 Chick-Fil-A Bowl. He is expected to be the Tigers’ starting punter in 2013.

Mark Laird represented the baseball team and started 59 games for the Tigers mostly in the outfield. He turned in a .307 batting average and 18 RBIs. During the College World Series, Laird registered an impressive .555 hitting clip.

Zach Wright, the individual champion of the Louisiana Classics tournament held at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, was the men’s golf representative on the honor roll.

The 2012-13 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2012-13 academic calendar. Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution's NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll.

Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
