NATCHITOCHES, La. – Three members of the LSU Sports Information Office walked away with first place awards Sunday at the annual awards brunch at The Landing Restaurant of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The brunch concluded not only the group’s annual convention, but the 2013 Hall of Fame weekend activities that included the opening of the new Hall of Fame building on Front Street and the induction ceremonies for the 2013 class that included LSU and NBA basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal and former LSU and NFL football stars Tommy Hodson and Kevin Mawae.
Associate AD/Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette won for Division I media guide for his football guide, which earlier has been named the best in the nation. Of the guide the judge commented, “Another great and well-organized volume that utilizes all 208 pages, color is sharp on all inside/outside covers, great emphasis on tradition with underlines and quick facts, photos are in good register and eye-appealing, historical action adds many nice touches.”
Associate SID Bill Martin won in the Division III Media Guide category for his women’s basketball guide. “Good use of photojournalism and accentuating LSU’s national success in recent years, very well-placed box scores in review and easy-to-read previews, bios,” was what the judge had to say.
Senior Associate SID Kent Lowe won for his “Lowedown” column in the release category written in the hours after the LSU women’s basketball team won its second round game over Penn State in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The judge wrote: “Many great memories, Sue Gunter history, really nice descriptive adjectives and word pictures, nice “By the Numbers” notes, NCAA history and scene-setting, courage of remaining seven LSU players, stories of overcoming injuries and team adversity.”
LSU also had two second place finishes – Bonnette for the football fact sheet and Lowe for his LSU men’s basketball guide.
