Women's Basketball Takes Part in Service Events
BATON ROUGE – The off-season for the LSU women’s basketball team is a time to train for the upcoming season and build upon the squad’s 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. In addition, head coach Nikki Caldwell and the Lady Tigers have been heavily involved in making a difference in the lives of the youth in the Baton Rouge community.
Lady Tiger student-athletes and Caldwell spent United Way’s “Day of Action” (photos) at Istrouma High School, spending several hours reading to kids, playing basketball, signing autographs and taking pictures (see photo gallery).
The Lady Tigers also teamed with the Baton Rouge Recreation Department and participated in the “Juneteenth Celebration” (photos) at Gus Young Park with dozens of children and families. They played basketball and games with the kids and signed autographs (see photo gallery).
“It is always important that we make a difference in the lives of others, especially kids here in Baton Rouge,” said senior guard Jeanne Kenney. “We have a lot of people who look up to us. We want to do our part and have fun doing it. Coach Caldwell is always stressing how important it is to help others and we all feel we can make a difference.”
The Lady Tigers will be spending their summer at other events around town, including incoming freshmen Raigyne Moncrief, Jasmine Rhodes and Rina Hill. LSU is well underway with a rigorous off-season training program featuring cross training and boxing. The team will spend two weeks in August playing exhibition games in Spain as part of a collegiate tour.
LSU returns seven letterwinners from its Sweet 16 team, including senior forward Theresa Plaisance. Plaisance will spend July with USA Basketball as a member of the World University Games national team. Plaisance led the Southeastern Conference in scoring last season with 17.0 points per game.
New season ticket deposits for the 2013-14 LSU women’s basketball home season are now being accepted online at www.LSUtix.net for a special price of $16. Details on how current season ticket holders can renew their tickets will be released later this summer.
