BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU shortstop Alex Bregman was named Wednesday as the National Freshman Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Bregman was honored along with Cal State Fullerton right-hander Thomas Eshelman, who was named National Freshman Pitcher of the Year.

Bregman, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., is hitting a team-high .385 entering this weekend’s Super Regional versus Oklahoma with 17 doubles, seven triples, six homers, 52 RBI, 58 runs and 15 stolen bases. He is No. 2 in the nation with 102 base hits this season.

He earned the Most Outstanding Player award last weekend in leading LSU to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional title. He batted .545 (6-for-11) in the regional with one double, one homer, three RBI and five runs.

Bregman was voted last month as the 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year by the league coaches, and he was also named first-team all-SEC at shortstop.

He is No. 1 in the SEC in base hits (102); No. 1 in triples (7); No. 1 in total bases (151); No. 2 in batting average (.385); No. 3 in runs scored (58); No. 4 in doubles (17); No. 4 in slugging percentage (.570) and No. 4 in RBI (52).

Bregman has been invited to join Team USA this summer for its 33-game international tour, which includes a trip to Japan.

Bregman becomes the fifth LSU player to earn a National Freshman of the Year designation, joining second baseman Todd Walker (1992), pitcher Brett Laxton (1993), second baseman Mike Fontenot (2000) and pitcher Lane Mestepey (2001).
