Notes on the Tigers
LSU clinched the 2013 SEC Western Division title Saturday with a 2-1 victory at Texas A&M … the division title was LSU’s second in a row and its fourth during coach Paul Mainieri’s seven-season tenure with the Tigers … LSU has captured 17 SEC Western Division championships in its history … LSU’s 45 regular-season wins matches the most recorded in school history since the NCAA adopted a standardized 56-game regular-season schedule … the 45 wins equals the mark set by the 1997 LSU club, which completed its regular season with a 45-11 record … LSU’s 21 SEC wins this season are the most by a Fighting Tiger club since the 1998 team posted a 21-9 league record … the LSU record for SEC wins in a season is 22, set in 1986 and 1997 … junior outfielder/DH Sean McMullen led LSU to a series win at Texas A&M and provided the game-winning RBI in the victory over the Aggies Saturday that clinched the SEC Western Division title for the Tigers … McMullen batted .455 (5-for-11) in the three games with two doubles, four RBI and one run scored … in Friday’s Game 2 win over the Aggies, McMullen collected a career-high four hits, including two doubles, and tied his career  best with three RBI … in Saturday’s 2-1, eight-inning victory at Texas A&M, McMullen delivered the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth inning with a two-strike sacrifice fly …  Saturday’s game was a scheduled seven-inning game, so LSU improved its mark in extra-inning games this season to 5-1 … LSU is 13-3 this season in games decided by two runs or less … the series win at Texas A&M marked LSU’s seventh straight SEC road series victory, dating back to last season … the Tigers won all five of their road series this season and the final two of last season … LSU’s last SEC series loss came on April 20-22, 2012 at Kentucky … sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola improved to 10-0 this season by defeating Texas A&M on Friday … Nola limited the Aggies to two runs on six hits in six innings with no walks and four strikeouts … LSU is 13-0 this season in the games that Nola has started on the mound … LSU reliever Chris Cotton earned a save and win last weekend at Texas A&M, improving his record to 3-1 and his saves total to 11 in 28 appearances out of the bullpen … Cotton worked a total of 2.2 scoreless innings against the Aggies, allowing just one hit with no walks and one strikeout … Cotton’s fellow reliever, junior right-hander Nick Rumbelow, also turned in two effective outings against the Aggies, firing two scoreless innings with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
