Notes on the Tigers
LSU (39-6, 16-5) is in first place in the SEC Western Division, and the Tigers are No. 2 in the overall league race … LSU has a 2.5-game lead over Arkansas in the Western Division, and the Tigers trail Vanderbilt by three games in the overall conference standings … sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola recorded his third straight complete-game victory Friday, defeating No. 10 South Carolina in Alex Box Stadium … Nola limited the Gamecocks to two runs on six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts … he became the first LSU pitcher to post three consecutive complete-game wins since Greg Smith accomplished the feat in 2005 against Ole Miss, Arkansas and Vanderbilt … Nola improved to 8-0 this season with a 2.14 ERA … in 80 innings, he has recorded 12 walks and an SEC-leading 90 strikeouts … second baseman Jacoby Jones hit .500 (5-for-10) in the South Carolina series with one double and one run scored … rightfielder Jared Foster hit .455 (5-for-11) against the Gamecocks, and he recorded a .500 on-base percentage …designated hitter/outfielder Sean McMullen batted .417 (5-for-11) in the South Carolina series with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored … senior leftfielder Raph Rhymes hit .438 (7-for-16) in the Tigers’ four games last week with two doubles, two RBI and four runs … the LSU-South Carolina series last weekend attracted a total paid crowd of 35,257, a record for a three-game series in Alex Box Stadium … the paid attendance figure of 12,727 on Saturday was the largest in stadium history, and the actual Saturday crowd of 10,246 was the largest actual attendance figure for a regular-season game in stadium annals … senior left-hander Brent Bonvillain turned in two excellent relief outings last week, working a combined six innings and allowing no runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts … junior right-hander Ryan Eades delivered a solid no decision outing Saturday against South Carolina, limiting the Gamecocks to just two unearned runs on six hits in seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts …LSU coach Paul Mainieri is just three wins shy of his 300th victory as the Tigers’ head coach … Mainieri, in his seventh season at LSU, is 297-128-2 at the helm of the Fighting Tiger program … freshman Alex Bregman continues to lead the Tigers at the plate, batting .398 (76-for-191) this season with 11 doubles, seven triples, five homers, 42 RBI and 46 runs … Bregman leads the SEC in hits and triples, and he is No. 2 in the league in runs and total bases (116).
