BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s tennis team (15-11) had two players selected to the All-SEC Second Team for the 2013 season – sophomore Chris Simpson and senior Stefan Szacinski. The men’s tennis SEC honors were announced Thursday morning by the SEC office.
South Carolina head coach Josh Goffi was named the SEC Coach of the Year and Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee garnered SEC Player of the Year honors. Romain Bogaerts of Mississippi State was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, and Daniil Proskura of Alabama was announced as the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Simpson entered the dual-match season unranked in singles and ranked No. 33 in doubles with Szacinski as his partner. Simpson, named to the SEC All-Freshman Team last season, went 11-12 in singles during the 2013 season, defeating eight ranked opponents, including then-No. 15 Evan King of Michigan, and then-No. 3 Libietis to clinch an upset victory over Tennessee. Simpson entered the singles rankings midway through the season and is currently No. 48 in the nation. Simpson and Szacinski are currently ranked No. 60 in the nation in doubles.
Szacinski also entered the season unranked in singles and recently made his season debut in the singles rankings, checking in at No. 104 on April 9. Szacinski has since moved up to No. 92 in the singles poll. Szacinski notched a 10-6 record in singles, winning eight-straight matches at one point and carrying a 6-2 record against ranked opponents, including victories over then-No. 31 Hunter Reese of Tennessee. He held an 11-7 mark in doubles, teaming up with Simpson and freshman Tam Trinh. Szacinski and Trinh are currently ranked No. 45 in the nation and notched a 7-2 record while taking down three ranked opponents.
The Tigers wait to hear about their future as the NCAA Tournament teams will be announced this Tuesday, April 30.
