BATON ROUGE – In the latest edition of the ITA rankings, the LSU men’s tennis team (15-11, 5-7 SEC) remained at No. 20 in the nation. The Tigers are coming off a first-round exit in the SEC Championships in Oxford, Miss., following a 4-3 loss to South Carolina (18-10, 7-5 SEC) this past Thursday.
For the first time this season, the University of Virginia (21-0) is not the top-ranked team in the poll as UCLA (22-1) takes over the No. 1 spot this week. Both schools are set to compete in their respective conference championships this week.
The SEC has been well represented in the ITA rankings all season long and this week’s poll is no exception. Four teams are ranked in the top 10, including the 2013 SEC Tournament champions No. 3 Georgia (22-4, 11-1 SEC), No. 6 Tennessee (23-8, 8-4 SEC), No. 7 Ole Miss (15-7, 7-5 SEC), and No. 8 Kentucky (20-11, 6-6 SEC). Seven more teams are ranked in the top 25, giving the SEC a total of 11 teams in the top 25. Texas A&M (17-12, 7-5 SEC) comes in at No. 11, Mississippi State (16-8, 6-6 SEC) is No. 12, Florida (15-10, 7-5 SEC) is No. 15, Vanderbilt (16-10, 6-6 SEC) is No. 16, South Carolina is No. 17, LSU is No. 20, and Auburn (13-9, 5-7 SEC) is No. 22.
LSU has a pair of ranked singles players, including No. 48 sophomore Chris Simpson, and No. 92 senior Stefan Szacinski, whose eight-match win streak was snapped at the SEC Championships against South Carolina.
The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be played May 10-11 and LSU waits to hear the announcement of the participating teams, which will be in the coming weeks.
